Langkawi known as The Jewel of Kedah (Langkawi Permata Kedah) is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border. On July 15, 2008, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah had consented to the change of name to Langkawi Permat Kedah in conjunction with his Golden Jubilee Celebration.

History of Langkawi
Langkawi was thought to be cursed by a virgin lady whom known as Mahsuri. However in 1986 then former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad decided to transform Langkawi into a tourist resort, helping to plan many of the islands building himself.

Tourism
On June 1, 2007, Langkawi Island was given a World Geopark status by UNESCO. Three of its main coservtion areas in Langkawi Geopark are Matchinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park, Kilim Karst Geoforest Park and Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park (Island of the Pregnant Maiden Lake). These three parks are the most popular tourism area within Langkawi Geopark.

Taman Lagenda near to Eagle Square

The Kilim Karst Geoforest Park (The Kilim River)
This area actually consists of three river estuaries that stretch from the Kisap village approximately 10 km to Tanjung Rhu and they are all interconnected. They are rich in wildlife and tourists may see hairy nosed sea otters, brown winged kingfishers, monitor lizards and swimming macaque monkeys. Limestone, inherently porous, forms caves and there are several in the mangroves. One of Langkawi's natural beauty spots is the Pirate Lagoon just outside the river. Technically this is a collapsed cave (hong) consisting of cave entrance from the sea emerging into a hidden lagoon with towering, limestone escarpments and smaller caves.

Religion
Islam is practised primarily by ethnic Malays. Other major religions are Hinduism (mainly among Indians), Buddhism (mainly among Chinese and Thai) and Christianity (mostly Chinese). Only four of the 99 islands are inhabited - Pulau Langkawi (the main island), Pulau Tuba, Pulau Rebak and Pulau Dayang Bunting. The population is approximately 99000 of which 90% are Malays. The other ethnic groups consist mainly of Chinese, Indians and Thais.

Hilir Perak as the world indicates, occupies the lower part of Perak River, hence the district comprises of mainly low lying areas which act as flood plains.

Hilir Perak is bordered on the south by the Selangor state boundary, on the north by the Manjung District and the east by Batang Padang District.

It covers a total area of over 172,000 hectares and has a population of about 233,000 people. The largest town as well as the administrative centre is Teluk Intan.

Being almost totally flat, Hilir Perak is fertile, it thus became one of the areas in Perak most sought after by the British. A major part of its agricultural area is planted with oil palm, rubber, coconut and padi.

Its rich soil has resulted in the oil palm plantations being among the most productive in the country. Other industries have also crept in and thus providing more income to the people.

Larut, Matang And Selama District - Background, Economy & History

The Cradle of Historic Landmarks

Larut Matang was once a prosperous area in northern Perak. Its boundaries stretch from Sungai Beruas to the south and Sungai Kerian to the north. Larut Matang became prominent due to the discovery of tin ore in Klian Pauh in 1840 by a Malay chieftain, Long Jaafar.

Through his industries efforts in successfully mining the ore, he was later awarded administrative power and the rights to mine tin ore over Klian Pauh.

Taiping played a significant role in the history of the Silver State and is thus the most famous and exciting oldest town in Perak. Formerly known as Klian Pauh, it was renamed Taiping to commemorate the end of the Larut War in 1874. With the signing of the Pangkor Treaty on the 20th of January 1874, Taiping emerged as the major town in Perak.

Taiping comes from the Chinese word Tai-Peng which means Eternal Peace. And indeed with the decision of the British government to maintain Taiping as their administration center, the once slow-paced town was transformed into a busy and developed town compared to others in that era.

Together with progress comes a string of historical firsts that has made Taiping into one of the well known town in Malaysia.

Manjung District Background, Economy & History

The Popular Choice for The Most Memorable Holidays

Pangkor came into the fore when the Pangkor Treaty was signed between the Malays and the British in 1874. It marked the first British intervention into the Malay Peninsular except for Malacca which led to the Perak War in 1875. It was also the beginning of British rule in the Malay States. The table on which the Pangkor Treaty was signed is still on display at the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur.

The Dutch trade in with Perak in 1680 led to the construction of the Dutch Fort at Teluk Gedung, Pangkor. Traditional Pangkor Island which is located about 7 kilometres west of Lumut, comprises a number of fishing villages. Now, even though the fishermen are still there, Pangkor has changed dramatically into a world class tourist destination.

Lumut history is intertwined with the history of Manjung, an ancient Malay Kingdom at times rival to Bruas and Gangga Negara. Later it saw some commercial activities enhanced by colonial adventurers and still increased trade in tin.

Lumut Town is located approximately 80 kilometres to the south-west of Ipoh and about 200 kilometres to the north-west of Kuala Lumpur. Lumut now is a bustling seaside resort town whose importance is fully enhanced by the Royal Malaysia Navy complex situated nearby. It is fast becoming one of the most important tourist centres in Malaysia.

Hulu Perak Background & History

Colourful, Historic Past

From historical records, the first person to discover Hulu Perak was Tun Saban, the son of Tun Perak, the Bendahara of Malacca in the early 16th century.

When Malacca fell to the Portuguese. Tun Saban fled to Patani and later settled in Belum, Hulu Perak. Here, he was to become the leader to the settlers of Belum.

In the 19th century Reman invaded Hulu Perak. But in 1902, it was destroyed by the Siamese who became the new master.

By an agreement between the Siamese and the British in 1902, the Siamese handed over Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan and Terengganu including Hulu Perak to the British.

Hulu Perak is the largest district in Perak, covering 656,300 hectares which constitutes 31.2% of the state of Perak. From this, 446,000 hectares is designated as permanent forest reserve. The total population is approximately 93,000 people.

The district is located in the northern part of Perak, bordering Thailand in the north, Kedah state in the west, Kelantan state in the east and Kuala Kangsar district in the south.

It consist of two sub-districts namely Pengkalan Hulu and Lenggong.
