Langkawi known as The Jewel of Kedah (Langkawi Permata Kedah) is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border. On July 15, 2008, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah had consented to the change of name to Langkawi Permat Kedah in conjunction with his Golden Jubilee Celebration.

Langkawi is a duty-free island. Langkawi means reddish brown eagle in colloquial Malay. The Malay word for eagle is helang - which is shortened to "lang" and kawi means the colour reddish brown.

History of Langkawi
Langkawi was thought to be cursed by a virgin lady whom known as Mahsuri. However in 1986 then former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad decided to transform Langkawi into a tourist resort, helping to plan many of the islands building himself.

Tourism
On June 1, 2007, Langkawi Island was given a World Geopark status by UNESCO. Three of its main coservtion areas in Langkawi Geopark are Matchinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park, Kilim Karst Geoforest Park and Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park (Island of the Pregnant Maiden Lake). These three parks are the most popular tourism area within Langkawi Geopark.

The Kilim Karst Geoforest Park (The Kilim River)
This area actually consists of three river estuaries that stretch from the Kisap village approximately 10 km to Tanjung Rhu and they are all interconnected. They are rich in wildlife and tourists may see hairy nosed sea otters, brown winged kingfishers, monitor lizards and swimming macaque monkeys. Limestone, inherently porous, forms caves and there are several in the mangroves. One of Langkawi's natural beauty spots is the Pirate Lagoon just outside the river. Technically this is a collapsed cave (hong) consisting of cave entrance from the sea emerging into a hidden lagoon with towering, limestone escarpments and smaller caves.

Religion
Islam is practised primarily by ethnic Malays. Other major religions are Hinduism (mainly among Indians), Buddhism (mainly among Chinese and Thai) and Christianity (mostly Chinese). Only four of the 99 islands are inhabited - Pulau Langkawi (the main island), Pulau Tuba, Pulau Rebak and Pulau Dayang Bunting. The population is approximately 99000 of which 90% are Malays. The other ethnic groups consist mainly of Chinese, Indians and Thais.

Hilir Perak District Background And Economy

A Region With Rich Culture And Diversified Economy

Hilir Perak as the world indicates, occupies the lower part of Perak River, hence the district comprises of mainly low lying areas which act as flood plains.

Hilir Perak is bordered on the south by the Selangor state boundary, on the north by the Manjung District and the east by Batang Padang District.

It covers a total area of over 172,000 hectares and has a population of about 233,000 people. The largest town as well as the administrative centre is Teluk Intan.

Being almost totally flat, Hilir Perak is fertile, it thus became one of the areas in Perak most sought after by the British. A major part of its agricultural area is planted with oil palm, rubber, coconut and padi.

Its rich soil has resulted in the oil palm plantations being among the most productive in the country. Other industries have also crept in and thus providing more income to the people.

Hilir Perak District - Where The River Meets The Sea

Peace Be Upon You

Selamat Datang!
Welcome to The Land Where The River Meets The Sea

Hilir Perak is a region you shouldn't miss while in Perak. This is the district where the mighty Perak River meets the open sea of the Straits of Malacca. Among the many interesting places to visit are Teluk Intan, the administrative centre of the district, rich in local and colonial history. Then there's the famous Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan, Malaysia's own equivalent to the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, a pagoda-style structure which is a timeless masterpiece. The World War II Memorial, a giant boulder, stands at the main road entrance to Teluk Intan.

The Teluk Intan Boatyards bear testimony to the boat building skills of the people of Perak. The estuarine village of Bagan Datoh with its picturesque countryside is the heart of Perak's coconut country. Beting Beras Basah, an important venue for the installation ceremonies of Perak Sultans, and Hutan Melintang, famous for its prawns and boat building industry.

Kerian District Background And History

A Simple Land, With Simple Folk And Attractions That Leave Lasting Impressions

Smallest of Perak's nine district, Kerian occupies an area just 958 sq.km. in northern Perak, bordered by Pulau Pinang and Kedah. It constitutes only 4.6% of the total area of Perak, with about 150,000 people comprising mainly agricultural folk, making up 7.9% of Perak's total population. Its landscape is almost all flat terrain and peat soil, with Bukit Merah, the highest point, rising to a mere 387 metres, in Mukim Gunung Semanggol. Kerian's most famous fresh water stretch is Tasik Bukit Merah, a huge lake you'll find enticingly attractive, renowned for its fish and of late for its more popular Bukit Merah Laketown Resort.
